I Was A Cub Scout
Live (Tonight is Goodbye)

Upon entry into Southampton’s Joiners, you instantly notice the trendy clothes, hairstyles and general attitudes of this young generation of music fans. Amongst the abundance of smoke and alcohol, there is plenty of talk and laughter; all part of the anticipation and build-up for tonight’s evening of fashionable UK up-and-coming bands.

The young Tonight is Goodbye warm up the crowd with a good set that gets people jumping. It’s pretty clear that the singer has studied Panic at the Disco’s Brendan Urie’s moves closely and imitates him shamelessly on stage.

Despite this, the set goes down well with the crowd and the night rolls on smoothly, thus carrying on the lively, youthful atmosphere.

Next up are the headliners I Was A Cub Scout, a Nottingham two-piece that takes to the stage after a lengthy amount of time setting up. It’s worth the wait though, as they instantly wow the restless crowd with fresh music that brings the sound of summer to our ears.

They involve the crowd with a bit of chat between songs that excites and gets people moving to their tunes. Although they perform and meet high levels of expectation there is a constant battle for attention due to the noise made by the chatting crowd often being louder than the band’s music. They come through undefeated however, with some of the hottest tunes that I have heard at the Joiners this year.

One method of grabbing attention is to jump into the crowd, which the guitarist does towards the end of their set. There is a moment of silence as he seems to disappear, but he comes bursting back and continues playing; seemingly on a natural high from the enthusiasm of the audience. I Was a Cub Scout are a huge success tonight, leaving everyone with a positive and uplifting feeling to go home with.
