Attack Decay Sustain Release EP
The Golden Section have crafted a simply stunning piece of work for their debut record. This Chichester four-piece have been building momentum with a series of stonking live shows on the Chichester live scene in the last few months, and this album is testament as to why many people will be coming under their spell once the record is released through this Charming Sound in August.
After a synth-based intro, the band hit the listener over the head with as good a four-song opening salvo as you’ll hear all year. ‘Be a Daemon’ is a sure-fire winner, whilst ‘Pack Up (Move Away)’ and ‘Only at Weekends’ show different facets of the band, twisting and turning through equal parts 80’s synth pop and post-disco stomps. Current MP3 single, ‘Interchange’, is classic, almost prog in terms of its epic structure, taking in multiple sections, some downstated, some full on and hard rocking. Live, this song packs a killer punch, and on record, it’s no different.
As the album progresses, we’re treated to more inventive amalgams of analogue and synth instruments. The way in which the conflicting sounds are meshed together makes Golden Section one of the most innovative bands I’ve heard this year. Finishing with two tracks featuring Tiffany Tremain of another highly rated Chichester band, Joey Nightmare, one of which ‘Spent’ is the album’s best song, with a killer hook.
Golden Section are a band to experience live, but this album is a fine place to start with them…It should take them to a huge audience.
