Wolfunkind
L’Album de la Maturité LP
This is the first international release from the madcap French band Wolfunkind. Research indicates that the band have broken up since the release of this mammoth package, which is a shame, as it provides a great introduction to a fine and extremely funny band. Comprising a full-length studio album, a live EP and a DVD this is certainly the real deal in terms of value.
The DVD shows that Wolfunkind loved to enjoy life and tore up stages everywhere they went. Their blend of funk and hard rock hasn’t been seen here before and the zany nature of the lyrics (for example, from ‘Starsky et Hutch’: “Starky, you love Hutch, that means you are gay” all delivered gleefully) marks this release as strictly for those who have a sense of humour.
On the album proper, opening salvo ‘J’y Vois Comme Starsky, J’y Vois qu’Hutch’, ‘Zizou Revient, Copacabana Spirit’ (perhaps a homage to a footballing hero?) and ‘Looking for Gabio (feat Angelo Moore)’ give you a pretty clear picture of where things are at in the land of Wolfunkind. Fabulous and funky, with a mixture of French and English lyrics, exhorting the listening public to all sorts of illegal (but strangely humorous) pursuits under an almighty bedrock of funk, topped off by the sultry saxophone of Angelo Moore. The whole album is in this vein and is full of, basically, thoroughly funny and eminently listenable nonsense.
The live EP, from the Terra Terre festival, shows the band to be both tight and great showmen, with an amazingly devoted fanbase. It all makes me wish I’d cottoned on to them earlier.
The world needs more records, and bands like this. RIP Wolfunkind.
