Peter Derzbach
Deni

Peter Derzbach rather bravely slots a ‘…she’s a star…’ chorus into ‘Deni’ and even sings it real high. Whether Peter has subliminally picked up on a certain single by James is anyone’s guess, but this song is a strong neurological reference to ‘She’s a Star’ and isn’t as good. It’s a lo-fi pop song, with quirky spoken vocals and it could well work if it could be taken in its own right.

‘Song for Tom’ doesn’t borrow its hooks, so is an immediate improvement on ‘Deni’. It’s a bit of a Violent Femmes vocal style over the top of a wavering indie pop backdrop.

Sometimes it’s really difficult to get into a song and after the ‘chorus incident’ on the first track, I have to admit I wasn’t as receptive as I could have been. Before Peter releases another song like ‘Deni’, he ought to look into the case of Wire vs Elastica and The Stranglers vs Elastica!
