Speed Circus
Rosie EP
North London seven-piece Speed Circus can boast the support of none other than the likes of Gary Crowley and Alan McGee as well as having supported that other North London seven-piece, Madness. Judging by this excitable and energetic 6 track EP, they have the potential to live up to the hype.
The title track ‘Rosie’ recalls the summery sound of early Style Council whilst the lager-sodden football terrace-styled chants of ‘Jose Cuervo’ are just downright good fun. The sixties-influenced sound immediately brings Liverpool cult heroes The Stairs to mind.
The urgency of ‘Power Struggle’ recalls another forgotten Liverpool act, The Dead 60s but best of all is the wild road trip that is ‘Soldier On’. With a defiant chorus drenched in passion and self-belief, the song catches the listener on the back foot by turning itself on its head and into a mesmerising dub masterclass.
This is clearly a band who know where their influences lie and they wear those influences with pride. The only slight let down here is the pedestrian reggae of ‘I Know You Can Hear Me’, which sounds like a watered-down (yes, watered down!) UB40. But let’s not let that deter from the main point here.
Speed Circus have a big sound, big potential and bags and bags and bags of energy and ideas. Let’s embrace them as they could well become a National Treasure one day like that other North London seven-piece.
