The Trials of Cato
Thought You Were My Friend

Live from Junction 1 in Cambridge, ‘Thought You Were My Friend’ is a new song from the new lineup for The Trials of Cato, with Polly Bolton leading the vocals in this quirky alt-folk song.

There’s a shuffle beat kicking along in this track, with the banjo supplying a memorable thread that bounces off the guitar throughout the verse. The melody slides and kicks with confidence, reminiscent in a way of KT Tunstall.

The overall songwriting style is hypnotic variations on a theme, building subtly until it hits airspace at the three-quarter mark. After this, the vocals get to fly a little more for the finale.

There’s definitely a pivot in their sound, so it will be super-exciting to hear the new album Gog Magog when it lands this year. Production on the album wrapped in February 2022.
