Just Mustard - Blue Chalk

Masters of sonically dissonant chops and experimental doomy tones, Just Mustard are on form with ‘Blue Chalk’. Haunting and powerful, this is a song that thrums with style.

Throughout the echoes of the long sparse section that fronts the song, it’s just Katie Ball’s voice floating over a series of fading tones. There’s bass guitar discernable in this early section, along a zenlike white noise sound bed, cut through with intermittent creative guitar slices.

The drums join halfway through, giving way to a jackhammer loop that swirls and grows like an audio cyclone. The way instruments fade in and out creates a wonderfully orchestrated chaos, with the ghostly vocal the only constant throughout the track. The lyrics are anchored to the word “underneath”, remaining minimal and abstract – a jumping-off point for elongated notes that are as much instrumentation as they are vocals.

There ain’t much else like Just Mustard – not just in terms of the creative experimentation, but in capturing it within such successful songs.

Blue Chalk Lyrics

Underneath, your only thought
Through glass eyes
That can’t see

Underneath, the footsteps
Laid on your sky
Laid on your sky

Underneath, shadows the same
The colours lost
That can’t see
