Peaceful Rest

Jump to...

What a smouldering slice of Americana we have here, a plate of intricately wonderful instrumentation upon which Sara Jean Kelley’s voice simply wows. But wait, we’ve done that thing where the movie starts right at the end, so now we need the flashback to explain how it all got here.

It all started with an acoustic guitar in each ear. On the left, a plucked melody; to the right, some strumming, with the bass guitar thudding in the middle alongside the drums and an echoing accent that drops away for the verse. It’s all incredibly stylish, with Kelley’s voice absolutely in the spotlight.

How do you bury somebody
who took shelter in your soul?
How can you carry somebody
when your back’s broken from your own load?

Hit your knee
Just start digging
Don’t start anything you can’t finish
Down below the bones and flesh
I’ll lay you to a peaceful rest

David Borné adds his deep voice to the second verse, with some thrumming lead guitar licking at the edges, thickening the soup as the second chorus elevates. The lyrics switch direction here, slipping the surly bounds of earth and dancing on the skies.

There’s just time to bring things down low before things head into the long sweeping end section where the voices swoop around each other in the air. Yes, a smouldering slice of Americana, elements of all the good stuff bundled into a classy track.

Nashville has a rich musical history, but the contemporary music issuing forth certainly lives up to the weighty past. ‘Peaceful Rest’ is a stunner.

Peaceful Rest Lyrics

How do you bury somebody
who took shelter in your soul?
How can you carry somebody
when your back’s broken from your own load?

Hit your knee
Just start digging
Don’t start anything you can’t finish
Down below the bones and flesh
I’ll lay you to a peaceful rest

Can you go back to where you came from?
Floating free among the stars
If this world can’t contain us
Why are you acting like you’re stuck where you are?

Hit the sky
Just start flying
Learn to live or die trying
Far beyond the bones and flesh
I’ll lay you to a peaceful rest

So hit the hay
Just start dreaming
Close your eyes on all your demons
Deep within my bones and flesh
I’ll lay you to a peaceful rest
