While I’m a self-confessed punk, I’ve always loved what it spawned in its wake. Siouxie and the Banshees, The Cure, Joy Division, Slowdive… there’s a lot of really incredible music that sounds nothing like the spikey jabs of the late-seventies, yet spawned straight out of that subversive melting pot.

There’s an authenticity to the tones of ‘Drowning In An Empty Sea’. The straight-laced beat, the trebly edge of the bass guitar, and the baritone sparkle of the lead guitar. It has echoes of ‘A Forest’, but also has character of its own. This is helped by the vocal, which is delivered in a higher register with a snap to it that I really like.

The lyrics are abstract and poetic, though the metaphor is clear enough. It merges the kind of language you’d get from Robert Smith and Pete Steele to create a doomy atmosphere.

Like many songs in the genre, it’s restrained in terms of dynamics and switches. The foundational elements remain similar throughout with the guitar making subtle adjustments to create the moments. Songs like this wouldn’t work if they deployed stop/starts and big focal moments, so they’ve made the right choice.

Honestly, if you like that post-punk and new-wave movement, you’re going to love Deceits as much as I do.

Drowning In An Empty Sea Lyrics

When you see into the sea
Do you see beauty?
I saw the glass half full
I hate to see it empty

But even if I drown
Waving hands in an empty sea
Empty sea, empty sea
But even if I drown
Waving across an empty sea
Empty sea, empty sea

As I sink into my dreams
I fall trapped into emptiness
To make sense of one’s life
Leads down hopeless fallacy

But even if I drown
Waving hands in an empty sea
Empty sea, empty sea
But even if I drown
So sanguine and hollow
Waving across an empty sea
Empty sea, empty sea

But even if I drown
Waving hands in an empty sea
Empty sea, empty sea
Even if I drown
So sanguine and hallow
Waving across an empty sea

I’m drowning in an empty sea
