Slowly, Long

‘Slowly, Long’ (stylised as ‘s l o w l y, l o n g’) is the latest single from Virgins and it’s a great ambient shoegaze hit. It’s neither slow nor long, it’s a reasonably pacey track with a 4:50 playtime that flies by.

The guitars start off with an urgent jangle that evolves into a swirling backdrop for the song, which is anchored by the bass and drums. This lets the vocal soar across the top.

In essence, this is the perfect example of the style. It has a dreamy quality to it that’s untroubled by the pace of the song and they pull out little hooks to flicker in the whirl. You can zoom in and out, picking out the detail or basking in the whole.

If you liked last year’s EP, Transmit A Little Heaven, you are going to utterly adore this single.

Slowly, Long Lyrics

I’m floating away
Just one more day
I’m floating away
Just one more day
Hold on my friend
Hold on my friend

I’ve been waiting in the dark
Singing for my friends again again
You won’t take very long
Slowly feel the shift away away

Go down on me
Oh won’t you stay
Go down on me
Oh won’t you stay
Just hold your breath
Just hold your breath

I’ve been waiting in the dark
Singing for my friends again again
You won’t take very long
Slowly feel the shift away away
