I’m out of order. More specifically, I discovered Cartographer one single in, so didn’t get to write about their first single, ‘Colorblind’. While I should just move on, the song is simply too good to leave behind.

For those unfamiliar with djent, it’s the term used for down-tuned, palm-muted, over-driven guitars within super-tight rhythmic metal. The term djent is basically the sound you make on the guitar… djent-djent… djent-djent-djent… you get the idea.

Anyway, Cartographer are really connoisseurs of the genre and they deliver it with a few twists. Although this is distinctively progressive metal, they bring some pop sensibilities, too. For example, I could imagine Paramore fans being attracted to this band as they’ll get the punch from the Jeremy Davis era, and even more so!

Well, ‘Colorblind’ kicks off with a synth hook before adding the full flavour of the band. The first verse gives a two-bar pause to introduce Skies Marie, whose vocal adds a perfect top line to the chugs and djents of the band.

The way the band moves through the arrangement is reminscent of Vivaldi (honestly, bear with me). They twist and inflect on their ideas like a classical composer – redrawing motifs and never quite repeating the same thing twice. It’s music done the hard way.

Colorblind Lyrics

Sketching memories into my head
Painting images I cant forget
Living life everyday no regret
I’ve got a secret that I won’t admit

Oh how I wish I could see it from the outside
What’s it like when you’re out there looking in?
All that I know is that I’m having such a good time
I never want this perfect dream to end

Like the hand that paints itself,
is this a memory or photo realistic recollection?
An animated chroma? An intoxicating fantasy?
A phantom fabrication?
My reality is what I make it

Colors infused by my insight
But all I feel is black and white
What do you do when colors collide?
There is no fuse without the light

Come alive come alive
I’ve finally come alive
Open eyes open eyes
Now I can open my eyes
Monochrome colorblind
Everything is black and white
Writing on the walls wraps around my mind

Thoughts clash like waves
I’m drowning again
Inhaling transparent messages
Help me to rescusitate
Just take a look at all this mess I made

Like the hand that paints itself,
is this a memory or photo realistic recollection?
An animated chroma? An intoxicating fantasy?
A phantom fabrication?

Colors infused by my insight
But all I feel is black and white
What do you do when colors collide?
There is no fuse without the light

Come alive come alive
I’ve finally come alive
Open eyes open eyes
Now I can open my eyes
Monochrome colorblind
Everything is black and white
Writing on the walls wraps around my mind
