The latest single from English Teacher is this wonderfully clicky single called ‘Nearly Daffodils’.

Alongside the clicky snare-edge beat, the bass does gymnastics and the keys add rumble-stip chords. Along with some noise in the verse, the guitar adds a motif to the chorus. All the while Lily Fontaine is added poetic lyrics with spoken word verses and languid melody in the chorus.

Next up, there’s a great interlude that starts in 3/4 (though the bass seems to drop a 7/4 line behind it), before things move to alternating bars of 4/4 and 3/4. This brings us to a great punchy section that appears once more at the end of the song.

English Teacher give us something quirky that’s shoegaze-adjascent, but with some oddball elements thrown in for good measure.

Nearly Daffodils Lyrics

Mostly it feels like a waste,
So much laughter un-canned
I’d forgotten the taste
Don’t make me go back

All the plans we tiptoed around
In quiet hours; Daffodil buds.
There is a reason
The first nine months doesn’t count.

Nearly
Presque
Daffodils
Nearly
Presque
Daffodils

Sometimes it tears like a freight train
Through a christening,
Displacing the new growth
and making everything ugly.

Sometimes I want to make a home on it,
To look between the wheels I’m scared of being under.
I’ve started knitting in the mornings,
I like to hear the birds sing.

Nearly
Presque
Daffodils
Nearly
Presque
Daffodils

Last night I dreamt
that we lasted
all the way ‘til spring
But now the fields are full
Of red and blue
With nothing in between
You can lead water
to the daffodils

Mostly it feels like a waste,
So much laughter un-canned
I’d forgotten the taste
Don’t make me

Nearly
Presque
Daffodils
Nearly
Presque
Daffodils

Last night I dreamt
that we lasted
all the way ‘til spring
But now the fields are full
Of red and blue
With nothing in between
You can lead water
to the daffodils
But you can’t make them drink.
