The Hills
Jump to...
The guitars kick straight in for Rachel Chinouriri’s latest single, ‘The Hills’ and they add a strong signature to this great song.
This song is a punchy flash of what we might get on Rachel’s debut album, which is coming next year. The great melody is there, just as it always is, but the indie sound has more bite and a sharper edge, which suits the powerful lyrical theme.
The video captures this song well, too. The song’s pace and the purposeful walk are a good match, it’s slow and heavy. The guitars have a brit-rock flavour, somewhere between Oasis and Embrace and the synth motif thickens things up when it subtly flickers at the edges of the chorus.
The song was written when Rachel was in LA and hit a low point where she felt she didn’t belong there. Although she was surrounded by the beauty of the hills, she felt homesick for her friends and loved ones back in London. This loneliness in a crowded place provides a heartbreaking anthemic quality to this record.
Rachel Chinouriri is a fantastic artist, she has a phenomenal voice and her songwriting is equally stunning. This song really left me stunned. Fantastic.

The Hills Lyrics
Typical
Complaining ’bout a miracle and I’m sad to say I’m here
It’s unclear why I’m devastated
Broken is the understatement of this whole year
I disappearWhen I’m gone
Gone with the wind
Pulling the skin off my bones
Coz deep from within
This place that I’m in
Is never endingWhen you don’t belong
The hills will know
It’s visible you don’t belong here
Long way down the road from the hill I know
Invisible
My weaknessHave you ever noticed that your house don’t feel like home
in a room that you’ve outgrown
scrubbing at the writing on the walls?
Everybody’s been there,
So you try your best to leave
I was told the grass is greener but it’s just a fantasy it seemsWhen I’m gone
Gone with the wind
Pulling the skin off my bones
Coz deep from within
This place that I’m in
Is never endingWhen you don’t belong
The hills will know
It’s visible you don’t belong here
Long way down the road from the hill I know
Invisible
My weaknessThe hills will know
The hills will know
They alwaysWhen you don’t belong
The hills will know
It’s visible you don’t belong here
