The Beaches - Blame Brett

Blame Brett

As an anniversary gift to the single’s original launch, Canadian rock band The Beaches have released a version of ‘Blame Brett’ alongside Royal & The Serpent.

That’s good news for those who missed the album, Blame My Ex, as this song introduces the melodic rock sound and great lyricism of The Beaches. The second verse of the original song makes way for the Royal & The Serpent version, but that lets a few stars align on the delivery.

‘Blame Brett’ has a flicker of rock and roll, but also nudges on the kind of smartly acerbic lyricism of the Britpop era. This aligns with the quirky storytelling styles of RATS, Lauran Hibberd and Candi Carpenter, though each act brings their own style to this wave.

The song has put The Beaches on our radar and we’ll definitely be giving the album some spins at HQ.

Blame Brett Lyrics (2024 version)

Done being the sad girl
I’m done dating rockstars
From now on only actors
Tall boys in the Raptors
I’ll become an asshole
Disguised as a bad girl
In my button-up shirt
A natural disaster
Hey

You could be my baby, baby, baby
You could be my baby boy, dear lady
You could be my baby, baby, maybe
Oh oh

I’m sorry in advance
I’m only gonna treat you bad
I’m probably gonna let you down
I’m probably gonna sleep around
So sorry in advance
Before you take off your pants
I wouldn’t let me near your friends
I wouldn’t let me near your dad

But don’t blame me, blame Brett
Blame my ex, blame my ex, blame my ex
Don’t blame me, blame Brett
Blame my ex, blame my ex, blame my ex

Might sound like I’m some narcissist
God forbid I’m cool with it
I play a great protagonist
Main character confidence
I’d rather keep my dignity
Than air our dirty laundery
This time it’s about me
Me and only about me
Hey

You could be my baby, baby, baby
You could be my baby boy, dear lady
You could be my baby, baby, maybe
Oh oh

I’m sorry in advance
I’m only gonna treat you bad
I’m probably gonna let you down
I’m probably gonna sleep around
So sorry in advance
Before you take off your pants
I wouldn’t let me near your friends
I wouldn’t let me near your dad

But don’t blame me, blame Brett
Blame my ex, blame my ex, blame my ex
Don’t blame me, blame Brett
Blame my ex, blame my ex, blame my ex

I’m only in it for the sex
That’s why I’m never gonna love again
I’m only in it for the sex
Blame my ex, blame my ex, blame my ex
Don’t blame me, blame Brett
Blame my ex, blame my ex, blame my ex
Don’t blame me, blame Brett
Blame my ex, blame my ex, blame my ex
