We’re still playing their Séance album at HQ, but that doesn’t mean we’re not ready for a brand new song from The Nightmares. And the new song is their brief tenebrous anthem, ‘Something In The Dark’.

The song is chained to a chunky bass sound that teams up with tom and snare drumming to drive things along, allowing the guitar to sprinkle the chords over the top in almost arpeggiated fashion. The mood is then set by the keyboards, which bring a haunted string sound.

The lyrics skip across the surface, perfectly capturing the horror mood.

‘Something In The Dark’ is a song for the outsiders, a song for those who don’t fit in – the misfits, weirdos and the nonconformists. The narrative of the lyrics tells the story of a young woman called “Blue” who one fateful day sees something that cannot be explained. This moment changes her forever and leaves her literally speechless from that point onwards.

The song was influenced by our love of artists such as Gary Numan, Killing Joke, and Heavens. The music video was inspired by our collective fascination with cult 90s television programmes like The X-Files & Twin Peaks.

The video, like all the artistic flourishes that accompany The Nightmares’ music, perfectly captures the mood. Fans will notice both the switch from Séance-red to a monochrome blue, and the reassuring ‘to be continued’ at the end.

Something In The Dark Lyrics

It’s written all over her face but she can’t speak
She saw something in the dark
The rain pours down, she’s soaked to the bone
She saw something in the dark
And it walked away

She hasn’t said a word to this day
She saw something in the dark
The tape recording stops, still an empty page
She saw something in the dark
And it all changed

They talk and talk and talk like she’s deranged
She saw something in the dark
They’ll never know the truth that’s in the shadows
She saw something in the dark
And she’ll never be the same
