The Sacrifice / At Sickness

Alkaline Trio follow up on Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs with a new double-a-side, ‘The Sacrifice’ and ‘At Sickness’. Let’s look at both songs, which were recorded for the album, but couldn’t squeeze into the intended forty-minute running time.

It’s apparent immediately that ‘The Sacrifice’ would have been a perfect track for the album, it’s a pacey number with a great guitar line for an intro and a melodic chorus. It has plenty of that lyrical playfulness – and I’m not explaining the two nuns, one cup reference… furthermore, I discourage you from finding it out for yourself. Some corners of the internet are best left to those with more specialised interests.

Though it also fits with the album’s style, the intro to ‘At Sickness’ has a great beat and staccato guitar stops that continue into the verse. I must admit, I wouldn’t have had the discipline to leave this one off the album. Another bonus on this song is the Dan Andriano lead vocal, which makes the double single even more varied.

We are very excited to be releasing these two songs as a seven inch/ Putting out an EP on 7″ vinyl is something we haven’t had the opportunity to do for a long time, so having two new songs to offer up on such a classic format is fun for us as vinyl enthusiasts.

Both At Sickness and The Sacrifice were initially written and recorded for our Blood, Hair, And Eyeballs album and leaving them off the record wasn’t an easy decision. It was done merely in the interest of the full-length’s running time, which we wanted to keep under 40 minutes. We’re psyched that these two numbers are being released and will be available on their own special format, no less.

The Sacrifice Lyrics

Bring us the sacrifice
Singing in the ruin and the end of days
Leave it to the sodomites
Swinging from the branches of the dying trees
Now upside down
Their voices torn from them upon the wind
This witch won’t drown
Where was your Jesus when we needed him?

Born again useless
Born again free
Born again clueless
Thank God for TV
Thank God for TV

Bring god his pair of dice
For his paradise is breaking up
I hear that he won’t play nice
No, not after two nuns and one cup
We’ve been shut down
Our lives are torn from us upon the wind
This trick won’t drown
After hours of water boarding him

Born again useless
Born again free
Born again clueless
Thank God for TV
Born again useless
Born again free
Born again clueless
Thank God for TV
Thank God for TV

Hey, what do ya say?
We’ve been here for far too long now
We really gotta leave

We’re running out of time now
Hey, what do we do?
We’ve been lost for far too long now
We haven’t a clue
Tell us where to go now
Tell us what to live for
Teach us how to die
Hell awaits a new war
Cover us in lies
Killing us with kindness
Sparing us the truth
Withering on the vine
Euthanizing youth

Give away the secrets of the holy land
Take away our feelings as fast as you can
Erase our own memories
Replace them with blood and sand

Born again useless
Born again free
Born again clueless
Thank God for TV
Born again useless
Born again free
Born again clueless
Thank God for TV
Thank God for TV

At Sickness Lyrics

I can’t believe they let me see
The way they fight
Eat sleep deny
Like a pair of starving dogs
Being trained to bite
Under gross fluorescent lights

Why did you bring me here
And if I’m really home then why
Why does it feel so strange
I’m gonna burn it down
Sweep the ashes off of what remains
Operate like this is all a…

Nightmare
I’m not supposed to be here
The steady pace of bitter taste from cold tears
I don’t wipe away any more
Hell I wish I was only depressed
I’m starved of all things but your stress
I get three square a day
And the excess I pray make it stop
What for?
I’ll meet you at sickness I’m sure

Bury my face in this earthquake
Cover my ears for heaven’s sake
I woke up rolling down a hill
Past some engaged in games
That lovers never will
How could you leave us here
This one looks at me like a TV
And why don’t they hear me scream
As I hop aboard this burning wreck
And head right for the sun
I’m done
Cause that’s the way I’m gonna end this…

Nightmare
I’m not supposed to be here
The steady pace of bitter taste from cold tears
I don’t wipe away anymore
Hell I wish I was only depressed
I’m starved of all things but your stress
I get three square a day
And the excess I pray make it stop
What for?
I’ll meet you at sickness I’m sure

I’m gonna end this
Nightmare
I’m not supposed to be here
The steady pace of bitter taste from cold tears
I don’t wipe away anymore
Hell I wish I was only depressed
I’m starved of all things but your stress
I get three square a day
And the excess I pray make it stop
What for?
I’ll meet you at sickness I’m sure
