If you think the room’s too cold, it’s just the chills caused by this perfect self-titled album from The Early November. With its subtle Tarot-theme, this record is start-to-finish great, and its stacked with variations on their sound.

The Early November (TEN) formed in 2001, signed to the legendary Drive Thru Records in 2002, and released their stunner The Room’s Too Cold in 2003. This is album number seven and it’s the modern reinvention of that energetic and choppy sound that propelled them into our playlists, where they have remained ever since.

Four solid tracks lead into the album. Driving anthemic tracks with plenty of ideas. There’s a switch up for ‘We Hang On’, which brings a smoulder with a slower pace and a delivery of the lyrics that captures the mood and a stormy chorus.

This splashes on the brightness of the instrumentation in ‘The Fool’, which picks the pace back up in time fot the spiky ‘Tired of Lying’ with it’s synth hooks skimming over the precise buzzing of guitars.

The flow of the album is replicated in minature with ‘The Dirtiest Things’, which transports you through the moods before the run in is deftly handled with ‘The High Priestess’ and the charming ‘It Will Always Be’. As a bonus, flipping straight back into ‘The Empress’ works well, which makes listening on repeat rather a joy.

For fans of the first album, this is definitely the right moment to come back to The Early November!
