When Die So Fluid launched their crowdfunding campaign, it was quickly apparent that people had been waiting for a new album. They aced the campaign, hit the goal, and have now delivered on their promise. Skin Hunger is not just a treat for long-time fans, though. This album has something that I think will find them a new audience.

The album is unexpectedly spacious and clear. It makes everything sound wide open – like you’re standing in this huge space with the band floating around you. They still bring intensity at times, but it’s crisp and crunchy and melodic in a way I love.

Now, this is a one-shot reaction post. It’s a listening party and the album isn’t out yet, but what I’m feeling deep down is that this is a perfect subculture movie soundtrack. It has that feeling of the dramatic moment. The songs, though, also speak through the lyrics. I like an album with lyrics you feel you want to read.

Let’s admit that it’s us
We are the virus
With greed and violence and drugs
We choke up the silence
But it’s a much bigger trip
To discover what’s inside us
We’ve no more right to be here
Than the forest or the spiders

This could give you shivers on its own, let alone with the blast of musical energy that comes along with it.

Okay… so the noteworthy tracks. We’ve covered the singles (all stunners) and I’ll link to them from the track listing (below) but ‘Disillusion’ and ‘Skin Hunger’ definitely caught my ear, along with ‘Long Shadow’. There’s not a skipper on the record, though. In fact, if I was within 100 miles of the studio I’d be stealing the discarded EMITAPE from the bins to see if I could turn up a lost track or two.

Throughout the party, the audience shared their love of the record. There was a kinda sad moment when ‘The Start Or The End’ let go of us all and we realized when it was over there would be silence. Curse you listening parties… you made us experience music properly again for the first time in years! Those memories where you caught a band playing live and they hadn’t even released their song yet… it’s like that all over again. The ache is, I believe, a missing ingredient from the on-demand era.

In terms of influences, Grog mentioned they included Deftones, Depeche Mode, Jeff Buckley, Siouxie and the Banshees. You’ll certainly find those useful references for a ‘should I have a listen’ decision. Or, you know, just hit play and decide on the actual thing!

The album arrives on 20th September, so there’s not too long to wait if you missed the listening party. I’ll certainly be putting it back on at HQ that morning!
