Why Are We Afraid To Let Go?

Jump to...

This latest release from Deceits is an urgent and full-bodied post-punk/goth rock track. The bass and drums open things up, but the waves and layers are soon upon us, all on top of the smacking sixteen-beat.

Before we get into ‘Why Are We Afraid To Let Go’, a quick aside! It’s easy for a sixteen-beat to sound kinda bland, but there’s lots of accenting and a good ear for when to bring more wash to join the rest of the band in elevating the louder sections. Like many Deceits songs, the bass brings trebly structure while the guitar licks us with a neat motif. There are also subtle screeches haunting the edges of the transitions between the song’s sections.

Even though the song rocks out, it’s rendered in fine strokes and I appreciate all that detail. This is one of my favourite tracks from Deceits.

Why Are We Afraid To Let Go? is a song is about either finding solace or accepting detachment with a person you care so deeply about, depending on how and when you read into and interpret the lyrics…

Why Are We Afraid To Let Go Lyrics

As sunlight crashes down
The moonlight fills the space
Eyes gazed so deep kept pondering
To feel like those around me
To feel like those around me
With a faint breath, we whisper
Why are we afraid to let go?

Afraid to wake up once again
Afraid to feel dissatisfied
Afraid to lose connection
For what seems like the millionth time
What affirmations can we say
To guide us through the turbulence
With a faint breath, we whisper
Why are we afraid to let go?

We don’t deserve to feel nothing
Don’t we deserve to love something
Convince ourselves we’re no longer afraid
No longer afraid
No longer afraid

We don’t deserve to feel nothing
Don’t we deserve to love something
Convince ourselves we’re no longer afraid
No longer afraid
No longer afraid
