The Cure - Songs of a Lost World

The Cure
Alone

Jump to...

Okay, so you probably don’t need an introduction to The Cure. If you didn’t fall in love with them in the post-punk era, and missed the giant wave of Disintegration and Wish, their Glastonbury headline set was a beauty that brought them to a whole new generation.

And this collective of odd fans, old and new, young and old, are about to get their hands on Songs Of A Lost World, which arrives on 1st November. ‘Alone’ is our first step into that world, and it’s a slow epic with a huge intro and bleak lyrics that arrive at the halfway mark.

Now, I don’t know if other folks feel the same, but there’s something about letting a song like this envelop you in its tenebrous folds that heals the soul. You might expect the cloth to be frosted from the cold, but it’s instead a warm salve.

The album is inbound, with a special double BBC Live session on 30th October, a 6Music session from 4-7 with Hew Stephens and a live Radio 2 In Concert session. Both will be available on the BBC iPlayer on 31st October. There’s a slim chance of getting a ticket for the concert – find out more here.

Alone Lyrics

This is the end of every song that we sing
The fire burned out to ash and the stars grown dim with tears
Cold and afraid, the ghosts of all that we’ve been
We toast with bitter dregs, to our emptiness

And the birds falling out of our skies
And the words falling out of our minds
And here is to love, to all the love
Falling out of our lives
Hopes and dreams are gone
The end of every song

And it all stops
We were always sure that we would never change
And it all stops
We were always sure that we would stay the same
But it all stops
And we close our eyes to sleep
To dream a boy and girl
Who dream the world is nothing but a dream

Where did it go?
Where did it go?
Broken-voiced lament to call us home
This is the end of every song we sing
Where did it go?
Where did it go?
Where did it go?
Where did it go?
Broken-voiced lament to call us home
This is the end of every song we sing
Alone
