Take Your Aim

Rocket deliver an alternative rock track like a grunged out version of power pop. Their single, ‘Take Your Aim’, which joins a re-issue of their debut EP, Versions of You.
The song conjures Siamese Dream era Smashing Pumpkins, the guitars delivering a solid wall of chords over the drums. The vocal nods more to Justine Frischmann, which complements the sound well, Elastica also delivering some great guitar noise in their brief flurry of two amazing albums.
The EP from Rocket has seven other tracks that join ‘Take Your Aim’ – there are plenty of 8 track albums about, but this record is 103 second shy of the thirty-minute-mark. The grungier sound doesn’t feature throughout, things vary from alt-indie through to alt-rock, often combining the two in one song. You might see references to Lush and Modest Mouse to match to the Elastica and Smashing Pumpkins moments. I really like ‘Portrait Show’ if you’re looking for the next listen after ‘Take Your Aim’.
‘Take Your Aim being our first piece of new music since our EP came out feels right. It was written at the same time as most of the songs on the EP and really reflects where we were as a band at the time. ’Take Your Aim’ feels as pertinent as ever for us as a band. ‘Take Your Aim’ is the indignant response to feeling misunderstood or taken advantage of by someone but not being able to confront them about it. Feeling hurt by someone you used to feel so close to and knowing that they are okay with the situation having no resolve.
Despite all of the sadness and anger, still not being able to open up a conversation with them about it, knowing that your intentions and feelings will ultimately remain misconstrued. It’s about a friendship that was built upon them taking more than they give and watching the friendship grow sour as time goes on. The verses illustrate the nature of the relationship; what that person says is what goes and no one can change their mind. The choruses fall back into the repetitiveness of overthinking; if this is all my fault like you say it is, then take your aim.

Take Your Aim Lyrics
You walk around with your head up off the ground
Why don’t you take a step in my direction
You ought to know what you say is just what goes
And there’s no giving up or sitting downWhy don’t you lie to me
Why’d you stop crying to me
You said I’m all to blame
Why don’t you come and take your aimSometimes you think that life is just a drink of water
Spilling out from my cup into yours
Has no one told you that you’re a sorry loser
That’s no way to treat someone who really caresWhy don’t you lie to me
Why’d you stop crying to me
You said I’m all to blame
Why don’t you come and take your aimWhy don’t you lie to me
Why’d you stop crying to me
You said I’m all to blame
Why don’t you come and take your aim
