Something New
Retro-modern rockers, Zero Point Field, have been around for just over a year. With influences drawn from Sabbath and Led Zep, mixed with a modern jerky rock sound, ZPF have just about managed to avoid the bustling London retro-rock scene and it’s associated anonymity.
‘Something New’ uses punchy guitars to full effect throughout with particular punchiness in the intro. The vocal is a mix of raw grit and assured range with just a hint of vibrato (not enough to make you run to the hills, but plenty to show a certain swagger).
Recorded in a live session, ‘Special’ kicks off with a change of flavour. Sinister guitars lead the dark rock sound with moments reminiscent of the scary bit in Bushbaby’s ‘Monsters’. There is even a vaguely Bauhaus break with swimming vocals and phased guitars, which adds a further element to the song.
Zero Point Field have neatly displayed their slightly commercial rock side along with their more innovative dark-rock alter-ego and it’s a great contrast either way around.
