Kat Vipers
Mother Superior
Kat Vipers is a twenty-something Athens born singer/songwriter who mixes classical and jazz sounds with contemporary hooks to create a rather unusual strain of music.
Initially, the piano works a muted tune for the start of ‘Mint Tastes Like Lemon’, while Vipers’ vibrato tones lay down a classical style melody. Some impressive orchestration adds to the already motion-picture epicness before the chilling chorus drifts in off the water.
‘Lady Purple’ creates the impression of a maxichrome jazz club with spikes of music all with a slight rasp added to the vocal. Things then shuffle along in a manner that presents a distorted reflection of smoky jazz, rather than a faithful tribute and the eeriness that is ever present in Vipers’ music adds a gothique trompe l’oeil.
The last symphony on the record, ‘This Soldier’s Gone to War’ is a detached song with vocals that reach levels of madness and chaotic disjointed rhythms that all add to a spine-tingling haunting aura.
This is exactly the horror-lullaby sound Billy Corgan was trying to achieve at the back end of ‘Ava Adore’ and on ‘Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness’. Kat Vipers has definitely claimed the throne of this genre with three distinctive songs.
