Losing Heart EP Sampler
Following on from the cheerfully titled ‘Losing Hope’, this two track sampler is taken from the positively upbeat sounding ‘Losing Heart’ EP.
‘The Modern Skill of Deception’ has a skate punk intro followed by dischordant gutteral screams that give way yet again to skate punk, in the Allister style vocals. The general sound is something akin to lo-fi AFI.
There is a great break with some thundering drums about half way through this two and a half minute track, which isn’t too bad apart from the horrible shouting in the intro and chorus and one line that is sung so incredibly out of tune that it must have been deliberate.
‘Being John Merrick’ is a quieter affair with subtle drumming and a great overall feel. There is a nice tune at work in the clean guitar as well, which sparkles throughout.
The main problem with this song is the pretentious title, which bears no relation to the song. Sometimes, when you use the phrase ‘Leave me Alone’ eight times in a song, you don’t need to look very far for a title.
Other than that minor gripe, this is a much better track; atmospheric moodiness with an emotional undercurrent. Even the screaming that I detested so much in the first track is used well here with a better level in the overall mix.
Little Girl Lost are mostly unrealised potential at this stage. They have a lot of work to do before they will hit that next stage in their development.
