National Heroes
Tales of the Town
Tongue in cheek, fun and very very good, National Heroes would fit neatly into the same box as The Kaiser Chiefs in terms of cheeky songwriting and occasional lyrical mastery – but they sound more like they’ve been hanging out with The Jam, Ian Dury and Veruca Salt.
The promo picture that sees a mix of mod-style leather jackets and top hats sums the band up beautifully. It belongs very much to London, and the down-in-the-heel scruffiness of an artful-dodger type of character suits the bashful, unassuming intelligence of the music.
This isn’t even British music – it’s actually very English, but thankfully not in a flag-waving, jingoistic way.
A great verse, a great chorus – it’s a great song. It’s not about The City of London, it’s about London Town and you should check it out.
