Mobrown - Kinky Lady

Mobrown
Kinky Lady

From the opening track, MoBrown clearly establish the fact that they play riffy blues, old-style, with traditional chord progressions, bass runs, and drumming. What gives them the spark, though, is the tongue-in-cheek humour that lays subtly beneath the songs, mainly manifesting itself in the lyrics.

‘Kinky Lady’ is a testament to this, charting the life of an S&M fan’s love life including romps with Teachers and Milkmen. The hook line of ‘They’re so in love, who’s gonna save us now’ pops up more to round off each verse than to add a chorus.

Second track, ‘Mr Hong Kong John’, has some great guitar riffs as well as a notable solo. This track isn’t quite up there with ‘Kinky Lady’ when it comes to a memorable chorus or hooky melodies; but it has the edge as far as groove goes, adding a little funky twist to the pacey blues-rock.

‘Fightin’ Crime’ finishes with the rockiest of the numbers with a late-Beatles sound in the vocals and lots of distortion and wah in the guitars. This is the best track for the drums, which create a solid rhythm of epic proportions.

MoBrown are unlikely to tickle the masses required for top-forty stardom, but with a quirky blues-rock sound parading enough big riffs to fill a large shipping container, they certainly have what it takes to make a name for themselves in the alternative market.
