It took a while, but we can finally say the words aloud: Linkin Park is back, and their future is looking bright again. They’re releasing a new album, a new lead vocalist, and a tour. Millions of people around the world are more than excited.

After weeks of speculations caused by the countdown on their website, we know a lot more now.

It was a special moment for many when the band members walked onto the stage, and started uncovering their instruments accompanied by the well-known ‘The Requiem’.

It was an emotional moment when Mike Shinoda greeted everyone with: ‘It’s good to see you again.’ The band then started playing their new song, ‘The Emptiness Machine’, and we heard new Linkin Park lyrics after a long while.

The first question – who’d replace Chester Bennington – was answered very quickly and most fittingly as soon as Mike was joined by Dead Sara’s Emily Armstrong.

Before we continue with Emily, we should mention a new drummer – Colin Britain, who is associated for example with Papa Roach or Basement.

As the gig unfolded, I believe I wasn’t the only one in the room to quickly go from she’s a good fit to she’s a great fit to she’s an absolutely brilliant fit.

Armstrong’s vocal qualities rival those of Chester as she can go from clean and pristine singing to the urgency Bennington provided. Fantastic.

Many will argue that Bennington is irreplaceable and they’ll be right, that’s why having a female lead vocal makes so much sense. It makes even more sense when you consider that Armstrong not only brings the quality and experience, but also allows for a fresh take on the the band’s music produced so far, brings new – feminine – energy, and will help them progress and develop into new areas.

Introducing her during the performance was a master stroke, a brilliant way to silence the ‘but how will she sing Chester’s parts?’ before they can even think about it.

The setlist, which you can find at the end of this article, consisted of old hits such as ‘Crawling’, ‘Numb’, and ‘Faint’ and new songs, e.g., the already mentioned opening ‘The Emptiness Machine’ or a piano take on ‘Lost’.

I can’t imagine a better setlist for the band’s comeback especially since the encore included ‘The Requiem’, ‘Papercut’, and ‘Bleed It Out’ to close the gig.

It was obvious the entire band was enjoying the evening with Shinoda having one long smile on his face all the time. The enjoyment only underlined the performance – while slightly nervous at the beginning, they quickly slipped back into their old new shoes and delivered a memorable experience.

The sound was classic Linkin Park. Nu metal is back and stronger than ever.

Just before the last song, Mike announced a tour and new album. The album should be out on 15th November 2024; the tour is happening this year!

I’m excited. This is the comeback we’ve been waiting for with a performance of the year.
