Ninotchka
Capricorn
Sounding like a cross between Gossip and Kenickie, Ninotchka’s ‘Capricorn’ is a muddy mix of warm fuzzy guitars, distorted vocals and growly keyboards.
I suspect that the musicians involved are much more talented than they appear, but they come across as the irritating artistic types who deliberately create nasty sounds and un-pop songs to show they aren’t trying to get famous.
It’s very difficult to keep upbeat about scuzz-pop bands. Biz were a novelty and enough people fancied those shouty girl bands to get them into the indie top 10 but that was the nineties and it was a fresh idea that lived off of a bit of genius and a lot of novelty.
I’m sorry to say it, but this record just doesn’t cut it.
