The Cure - A Fragile Thing

A Fragile Thing

Jump to...

Reflecting the sadder moments of their Disintegration and Wish era, ‘A Fragile Thing’ is a wondrous and abstract story where you can only imagine what causes the conversation it documents.

Musically, the piano throws two notes under everything, with the guitars pushing minor chords and the bass shifting around with an awesome chunky tone. The lyrics are delivered with some nice changes of pace, adjusting how they fit into the music in ways that bring lines to your attention.

I never thought I’d need to feel regret for all I never was
But all this time alone has left me hurt and sad and lost

This combination of tones and sounds in unique to The Cure. You could detect Cure-ness in a subsecond slice of this. It’s immediate and recognisable across every layer. Fans of the aforementioned albums will love this new song.

‘A Fragile Thing’ is driven by the difficulties we face in choosing between mutually exclusive needs and how we deal with futile regret that can follow these choices, however sure we are that the right choices have been made.

The album arrives on 1st November and don’t forget there’s a special double BBC Live session on 30th October – a 6Music session from 4-7 with Hew Stephens and a live Radio 2 In Concert session. Both will be available on the BBC iPlayer on 31st October. There’s a slim chance of getting a ticket for the concert – find out more here.

A Fragile Thing Lyrics

“Every time you kiss me, I could cry,” she said
“Don’t tell me how you miss me, I could die tonight of a broken heart
This loneliness has changed me, we have been too far apart
And it’s too late now for me to just forget
I never thought I’d need to feel regret for all I never was
But all this time alone has left me hurt and sad and lost
Yeah, every time you kiss me, I could cry
Don’t tell me how you miss me, I could die tonight of a broken heart
This loneliness has changed me, we have been too far apart”

“And there’s nothing you can do to change it back,” she said
“Nothing you can do but sing, ‘This love is a fragile thing’
Nothing you can do now but pretend again”
“Nothing you can do to change it back,” she said
“Nothing you can do but sing, ‘This love is a fragile thing’
‘This love is my everything’
But nothing you can do to change the end”

No, nothing you can do (Nothing you can do, nothing you can do)

“Every time you leave me is a lie,” she said
“You make-believe you need me, but you try too hard and it feels so wrong
You promise me forever and you say it won’t be long
But it’s too late now for me to just forget
I never thought I’d need to feel regret for all I never was
But all this time alone has left me hurt and sad and lost
Yeah, every time you leave me is a lie
You make-believe you need me, but you try too hard and it feels so wrong
You promise me forever and you say it won’t be long”

“And there’s nothing you can do to change it back,” she said
“Nothing you can do but sing, ‘This love is a fragile thing’
Nothing you can do now but pretend again”
“Nothing you can do to change it back,” she said
“Nothing you can do but sing, ‘This love is a fragile thing’
‘This love is my everything’
But nothing you can do to change the end”

No, nothing you can do to change the end
