Nova Twins’ Supernova album was amazing, but even more so when you saw them play it live. As we build towards a third record, ‘Monsters’ paves the way, despite no official announcements on when it will arrive.

The song has a dramatic fuzzy riff in the chorus and a whomping bassline in the verse. It sizzles along to that huge chorus, which gets additional Munstery keyboards to fully develop the monstrous theme. The lyrical hook of ‘I’m not afraid of monsters, but I’m afraid of myself’ hints at the powerful theme of the song.

Monsters is about awakening to and understanding your mental health. Growing up, we often look outward, absorbing what life throws at us. Over time, the good and bad experiences start to settle. Before learning to navigate these feelings, you may face self-loathing, anxiety and a fear of who you’ve become. Confronting these emotions, breathing through them, and opening up to someone can help. Many people struggle with mental health, and this song aims to show vulnerability and let our audience know they’re not alone.

The two-thirds section of the song has a breakdown with huge warping tones, followed by an eerie rendition of the riff before the chorus returns to close the song. It’s all epic and thick and I’d love a whole album of this from Nova Twins.

Monsters Lyrics

I’m not afraid of monsters
But I’m afraid of myself

You promised me heaven
But this feels like hell
I can’t get sleep, so I just tell myself
Can’t get to heaven
So I’ll stay in hell
I can’t find peace, sometimes I hate this realm

I’d like to think that I
Could be somebody else
If I were a star, I’d shoot away so far
Sometimes I find it hard to recognise myself
Like I’m an alien, spaceship, crash, burn it

I’m not afraid of monsters
But I’m afraid of myself
Stuck in an illusion
Crying for help
I’m not afraid of monsters
But I’m afraid of myself
Looking in the mirror
I tell myself
Monsters, I’m not afraid

I’m not afraid of monsters
Monsters inside of me
I’m not afraid

Promise me heaven
But this feels like hell
I’m in the deep, another rainy spell
I can’t get to heaven
So I stay in hell
Round and round on this carousel

I’d like to think that I
Could be somebody else
If I were a star, I’d shoot away so far
Out of my head
I need time to digest
I need to tell myself
To breathe

I’m not afraid of monsters
But I’m afraid of myself
Stuck in an illusion
Crying for help
I’m not afraid of monsters
But I’m afraid of myself
Looking in the mirror
I tell myself
Monsters, I’m not afraid

I’m not afraid of monsters
Monsters inside of me
I’m not afraid
Monsters
I’m not afraid of monsters
Monsters inside of me
I’m not afraid
Breathe

I’m not afraid of monsters
But I’m afraid of myself
Stuck in an illusion
Crying for help
I’m not afraid of monsters
But I’m afraid of myself
Looking in the mirror
I tell myself
Monsters, I’m not afraid
